Love Your Skin This Fall: 7 Expert Secrets

Seasons change, skin needs change and so should your skin care routine. Even in warmer or temperate climates, temperatures drop from summer into fall and winter — and this will impact your skin.

Different factors come into play at different times of the year, which require adjustments to ensure proper skin health. In the summer, there’s more humidity creating moisture for the skin, which adds a layer of protection. In cooler months, the air becomes drier outside as well as inside thanks to heating. When our skin loses that armor of moisture, it becomes drier and more sensitive.

Fall Skin Care Do’s and Don’ts

We want you to love your skin to make you feel great inside and out! As we are here to help, we have seven top recommendations that are easy to apply right now.

Here are our secret do’s and don’ts to guide you through the upcoming months:

1.) Do Hydrate Your Skin Overnight

It’s essential to boost moisture to make up for the loss as the air cools. A great way to do this is to make products work for you while you sleep. Using an overnight mask once a week will help your skin stay hydrated.

Recommended Product: PCA Skin Hyaluronic Acid Overnight Mask

This product contains a blend of natural ingredients to correct skin while in slumber, including niacinamides and bark extract. This will calm and soothe the skin, while boosting skin’s radiance.

2.) Don’t Skimp on Skin Care While Traveling

If you plan to travel to a drier climate like the mountains – Lake Tahoe is a favorite – carry a sheet mask with you. A quick-recovery mask is an easy-to-pack way to keep on top of your skin care regimen and help you adapt to the arid air.

Recommended Product: Viktoria De’Ann PEPTI-Nano Mask

Packed with moisture, this bio-cellulose mask (structured with hyaluronic acid) uses nanotechnology to penetrate peptides and nutrients into skin and soothes skin afterwards.

3.) Do Turn on that Humidifier

This is a great addition to your routine and it’s not just good for your skin but for your sinuses or colds. Place it in the bedroom while sleeping. It’s key to get the right PH level of skin balance and a humidifier will help add moisture back in the air when it’s dry.

Quick Tip: Fill your humidifier with distilled water and not tap water. It’s healthy, smells better and will not release dust into the air.

4.) Don’t Forget to Layer on Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Tried and true, this ingredient is excellent for all skin types, whether oily or dry. Add it under your favorite moisturizer. By integrating hyaluronic acid into your routine there is no need to switch up your moisturizer during colder months. In the winter, you may use a thicker moisturizer if living or visiting a colder winter climate, such as on a ski vacation.

Recommended Product: Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum

These vitamin-packed ingredients will replenish and hydrate skin and fight dryness.

5.) Do Use Mild Exfoliants

Now that you know how important it is to include hyaluronic acid into your daily skin care practice, note that the best way to use it is after you’ve renewed skin with a mild exfoliant. You can work an exfoliant into your routine in one of two ways:

  • Mix an exfoliant with your cleanser. To avoid irritation for sensitive skin, shake the powder into your hands and mix with a gentle cleanser. Then apply to your skin and cleanse. It’s a time saver! A great option is the Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant. Follow up with a hyaluronic serum and moisturizer.

  • Use a serum form of an exfoliant, notably one that is lactic acid based. Lactic acid increases cell turnover to eliminate accumulated dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin. This ingredient is especially effective on sensitive skin, meaning skin that is reactive, breaks out or has rosacea. After cleansing, apply the exfoliant drops, then your hyaluronic acid serum and follow up with your favorite moisturizer. To speed up your routine, you can mix drops from the serums into your moisturizer instead of going through steps separately.

Alternatively, if your skin is normal or dry you can instead consider rotating a Vitamin C serum one another day with the lactic acid for brightness and to even skin tone.

Recommended Product: Viktoria De’Ann Lactic 5% + Collagen

This item provides a neutralizing peel that offers corrective exfoliation, perfect for cold air recovery. Additionally, the collagen provides hydration and helps with pores, uneven skin tone and wrinkles.

6.) Don’t Ignore Your Body Care Regimen: Do Start Dry Brushing Daily

Fall is about detoxification and cleansing your body and skin. Anti-inflammatory products and ingredients are good for the body during the seasonal changes as the body changes. Dry brushing helps answer this need as a daily body massage with a dry, stiff-bristled brush that provides benefits, inside and out.

On the outside, the mechanical movement of the brush exfoliates rough, dry skin and unclogs pores. Removing dead skin cells make way for radiant, smoother and softer skin. It’s a great way to hydrate. Do this right before a shower to wash off the flaky skin.

On the inside, the exfoliation process detoxifies the skin by increasing circulation and lymph flow. By unclogging the pores, the body can sweat and eliminate toxins. It is also a stimulant to the nervous system, much like how invigorated you feel after a massage.

Recommended Product: Eminence Organics Stone Crop Body Oil

After dry brushing, be sure to moisturize. We recommend products with jojoba oil as a follow-up. Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties and vitamins to ease chafing and redness and repair the skin. Another option is Eminence Organics Stone Crop Body Oil. Bathed in stone crop, arnica, avocado oil and aloe, it’s succulent and soothing for the skin.

7.) Finally, Don’t Drop the SPF in Fall or Winter!

This means using SPF even indoors, especially if you’re working near a window or driving, and certainly on dreary, cloudy days. The skin benefits from protection year-round, even when sun rays are mild, and it’s great for anti-aging. Continue using your favorite SPF product, whether blended into your makeup or moisturizer or as a stand-alone. Be sure to use at least SPF 30 to 50, no less.
