Susannah’s Microcurrent Journey (Part 1 of a Series)

For context: I’m Susannah Nation, the new-ish owner of Moonstone Skincare, and formerly of Real Kind, the little Novato apothecary with the mosquito spray and kickass skincare products.

I lost 40 pounds with Wegovy—and now I’ve got loose skin, a complicated relationship with my mirror, and a renewed interest in building confidence.

So I’m strapping in (literally) for 8 microcurrent sessions in 24 days, the same 24 to Contour September challenge that we just opened up to our clients. I’m documenting all of it: the awkward photos, the weird muscle spasms, the wins, and the moments where I question all my life choices.

Let’s see what happens together.

What on Earth am I Doing?

Let’s talk about bodies.

More specifically, my body—which, for the next 24 days, is the test subject in a slightly terrifying, very humbling experiment.

I’m doing a full 24-day microcurrent body sculpting series—8 sessions over 24 days—to show you exactly what this treatment can do for toning, lifting, and rebuilding confidence. Abdomen, back, sides. The “corset,” as we call it. And I’m documenting everything. Photos. Feelings. Belly fat in natural lighting. Weird muscle twitches. All of it.

Why? Because after losing 40 pounds with Wegovy, I found myself with loose skin, mixed emotions, and the nagging realization that confidence doesn’t just arrive with weight loss. It has to be rebuilt, too.

So I’m doing the work. Showing up. Letting the microcurrent do its thing—and sharing it all in real time:

  • Before-and-after photos (no filters, just fluorescent-light-level honesty)

  • Blog posts (equal parts reflection and sarcasm)

  • Facebook and Instagram updates (the good, the weird, and the ugly)

  • Behind-the-scenes insights (what it feels like, what it does, what’s actually happening)

This series is the same protocol we’re offering in September for our 24 to Contour challenge. So if you’re curious, skeptical, hopeful, or all three, follow along. I’m doing this first so you can see what’s real—and decide if it’s right for you.

SESSION 1: Microcurrent Meets Middle-Aged Mom Core

So, here’s what went down at my first microcurrent body sculpting session. Spoiler: My abs got more of a workout than I have given them in at least a decade, and I never left the treatment bed.

I showed up in a sports bra, t-shirt, and yoga pants because comfort first, delusion about how cold it is on an overcast summer morning in Marin second. I stripped down to my sports bra and yoga pants, and bravely allowed “Before” photos to be taken. Full vulnerability. Full mom energy. Hope’s a mom, I’m a mom, and we already had that “no secrets left, might as well laugh” vibe.

Then the fun started.

Hope hooked me up to the microcurrent pads—belly, sides, and back—and started me on Level 1: Relax. It felt like a warm, buzzy hum. Like someone snuck a beehive under my skin but the bees are licensed massage therapists. I hung out there for about 10 minutes.

A few minutes in, my thighs started twitching. Not dramatically—just tiny little spasms like my nervous system was doing an interpretive dance. Hope explained that even though the pads were only on my core, the current is systemic—it’s influencing my whole body. Lymphatic system, nervous system, skin, even my psyche was getting a tune-up.

Next came Level 2: Detoxify. This one works to help drain lymphatic fluid, clear out cortisol (our dear middle-aged frenemy), and fire up cellular metabolism. It wasn’t painful at all—just felt like I’d swallowed a vibrating phone and forgotten about it. That was another 5 minutes or so.

And then… Level 3: Build.

Y’all.

I was not ready for this.

Imagine Braxton-Hicks contractions, but you’re not pregnant and you’re lying on a spa bed while someone calmly explains that your abdominal muscles are being recruited to rejoin society. My core was involuntarily contracting and releasing, over and over, for five minutes. Muscles I forgot I had were like, “Ma’am?? We’re alive???”

It wasn’t painful. Not even slightly. Just … surprising. HOW is my entire abdomen contracting so much my back arches, when I’m not doing anything? I might have giggled uncontrollably for a solid 5 minutes at Hope (who, by the way, is so happy to be along for your ride. She’s a great microcurrent guide, so empathetic and excited for your journey.)

I could feel it in my legs. In my posture. In my existence. And when it ended, and Hope removed the pads, I could still feel the electricity in my body. When I touched my stomach, it was like I hit the “on” button again. Freaky. Fascinating. Kind of amazing.

I drank all the water. I felt wiped (in a good way). And that night, I slept like a happy swaddled baby.

Second session’s in two days and I already wish it were tomorrow. I am weirdly obsessed. Possibly becoming a cult leader. Will report back.
