Susannah’s Microcurrent Journey, Part 3 of a Series

For context: I’m Susannah Nation, the new-ish owner of Moonstone Skincare, and formerly of Real Kind, the little Novato apothecary with the mosquito spray and kickass skincare products.

I lost 40 pounds with Wegovy—and now I’ve got loose skin, a complicated relationship with my mirror, and a renewed interest in building confidence.

So I’m strapping in (literally) for 8 microcurrent sessions in 24 days, the same 24 to Contour September challenge that we just opened up to our clients. I’m documenting all of it: the awkward photos, the weird muscle spasms, the wins, and the moments where I question all my life choices.

Let’s see what happens together.

Microcurrent Session 3: The One Where I Almost Tapped Out (But Didn’t Cry, So That’s a Win)

Welcome back to the saga of me voluntarily electrocuting my core in the name of science, skincare, and vanity.

This week’s episode: Hope and I cranked the microcurrent machine to Level 4, aka “Just Shy of an Exorcism.” Previously, I’d maxed out at 2.5, so this was a leap. And friends, about 12 minutes into the Build phase, my abs started waving a tiny white flag and whispering please, ma’am, we are but soft tissue. I had to ask her to turn it down. I never ask to turn it down. But my muscles were shaking like frightened Jell-O on a subway train.

Do I regret tapping out? Yes. Do I still consider myself a brave and noble pioneer woman in the realm of aesthetic body sculpting? Also yes.

Here’s what I’ve learned this week:

💧 Water is not optional. You must become a hydrated beast before your session. I’m talking 3–4 cups of water in the hours before. If you’re not fully juiced up, the current doesn’t conduct well, and you could cramp up like a dehydrated witch in a Pilates class. I’m usually good about water, so no cramps for me — just deeply sentient abs.

Microcurrent plays the long game. Even after your last session, your body is still out here making fresh collagen and elastin, thickening up your skin like a self-healing bounce house. Don’t expect to wake up looking like J.Lo the next day. Your body is working on it, okay?

💪 Post-treatment soreness is real. My abs felt like they’d been to bootcamp. Not in a “help I can’t sit down” way — more like “oh hey, turns out I have a core.” Honestly thrilling.

🌀 Back pain relief? What sorcery is this? My chronically cranky lower back (which I blame on childbearing, large breasts, and being a person in late-stage capitalism) felt way better this week. Turns out when your abs start doing their job, your spine stops filing HR complaints.

😴 Sleep: Improved. I usually wake up at 3am to worry about things I said in 2007, but this week I mostly slept through the night. Except the one time I had wine, which is sleep kryptonite.

💩 Digestion: Shockingly efficient. Not that I was struggling before, but let’s just say things are now... regulated. Elegant, even. Could be the microcurrent. Could be the extra veggies. Could be magic. I’m not investigating further.

I’m taking a few days off to recover before my next session. But so far, this is one of the weirdest, most fascinating, and sneakily powerful treatments I’ve ever done. I feel stronger. More awake. Less snack-driven. Slightly more majestic.

See you for Session 4.
